It’s officially Memorial Day Weekend and that means the start of summer! BBQs, trips to your lake house, poolside parties, bonfire nights, here comes the fun! There is something special about this weekend that brings such thrill. After so many months of such insane cold here in Syracuse, it’s nice to look forward to warmer days! I know I am looking forward to a fun trip with the family out to NYC, but there is one thing I’m working hard on keeping as a priority in the coming weeks; making sure I stay hydrated as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer.
I was always the one with a coffee cup in my hand throughout college, no matter what the time of day, if you passed me on campus I was carrying a fresh brew. Aside from the unsteady hands I started to have, I was horribly dehydrated most of the time, so now I try really hard to limit my coffee intake to two cups a day max unless it’s a crazy busy day, and to carry a bottle of water with me. At one point I began even carrying a whole case of water in my trunk just to make sure I stayed hydrated with my on the go lifestyle.
Some times the easiest way to get yourself to drink is to make it look fun. Like our Beauty Editor pointed out, you can add lemons or limes to your water for a refreshing drink. I tend to put both in mine. If you start your day with water it sets things on the right track, helping you feel more alert. Why not fill a jug of filtered water in your fridge with either sliced cucumbers or rosemary? During a week-long stay in Mexico with a good friend of mine we had herb infused water every day on the resort and I never felt better. I have horrible sinus headaches, so tricks like this help me feel better.
I also try to start my day with a green juice. Often times I’ll make my own with kale and avocado or I’ll order online from Pressed Juicery or Blue Print Cleanse. Both companies make incredible green juices, but Pressed Juicery has a larger selection of fruit based options. I’d take a look at both sites and see what works best for you. If you prefer to make things at home then take a look back at our last beauty post by our guest contributor, Anick where she shared a few of her favorite smoothies.
And some times just fun little things like ice cubes make all the difference between a plain glass of water and a refreshing glass of water. You can grab a regular ice-cube tray and fill it up with whatever fruit or edible flower you want. I actually used an ice-cube tray and a cupcake baking mold for my ice cubes. They were so fun to make!
But the truth is, you aren’t always home and won’t have these little pretty things at your fingertips. Some times you need to run around with your water or juice or whatever while you’re say, on a boat? So why not have a bottle that won’t fly away at the slightest wind? Why not invest in a bottle that not only looks great, but is from a great company that I personally love, bkr! The San Fransisco based lawyers started this chic and really smart company that let’s you bring your water with you without adding to the ever growing wasteland that plastic bottles create. Bkr bottles are covered in silicone that keeps them from breaking and come in these really cool colors, based off of runway designs for the season or other inspiration that Tal and Kate see around town! I used SU colors for my shoot because, well, I can! But I even have a pink one named Bambi! That’s actually the cutest part, all of them have names and they have so many options and are constantly coming out with different options for sizes.
Another thing that I love to indulge in every once in a while is a cool company that also does something for the world. Boxed Water is one of those brands, for every Boxed Water that you buy and post to social media, they plant 2 trees! In a world where we are trying in so many different ways to limit our damage to the environment here comes a company that goes that extra mile in making it better! It’s purified water using reverse osmosis and the taste is pure and crisp, just the way water should be. The carton is comes in is also well thought out, compact, and easy for shipping it reduces waste and all of it, the carrier, water boxes are all recyclable.
So whatever you do this weekend I hope you keep a glass or bottle of water close at hand! I’ll be active on our IG from NYC from tomorrow so keep a look out for ways in which I’ll be sticking to my plan to stay hydrated out there! And if you get a chance to go to a Memorial Day Parade in your area don’t forget to show your respect to those who serve and remember those who we’ve lost while protecting our country, after all, it is Memorial Day Weekend!
